Size guide

Choosing the right size is the single most important decision for a rug. Here is how the standard sizes map to rooms, plus a centimetre conversion chart.

Recommended placements for the spaces where rugs live and breathe.

Living room

  • 8x10 - front legs of sofa on rug
  • 9x12 - all furniture on rug
  • 10x14+ - open-plan great rooms

Bedroom

  • 5x8 - queen, rug under bottom 2/3
  • 8x10 - king, rug under bottom 2/3
  • 9x12 - entire bed + nightstands

Dining room

  • 6x9 - 4-seater table
  • 8x10 - 6-seater table
  • 9x12+ - 8+ seater table

Rule: rug extends 24" / 60cm past each chair when pulled back.

Tips from our studio

Leave a border

Aim for 18–24" (45–60 cm) of bare floor between the rug edge and the wall. A rug floating inside a room feels considered; one wall-to-wall feels like carpet.

Bigger is (almost) always better

A rug that is too small is the most common mistake. When in doubt, size up - a rug should anchor the furniture, not float between it.

Tape it out

Before buying, outline the rug size with painter’s tape or newspaper on the floor. Walk around it, place a chair on it — you’ll know in five minutes.
